Last Time Out

In this updated edition of "Last Time Out," we take one last lingering look at the game’s most recently celebrated retirees—Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr., and some who weren’t all that celebrated in retirement—Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, all four ignored by voters for Baseball’s Hall of Fame. John Nogowski reflects on their finales as well as those of many other giants of the game—44 in all. This edition includes a few personal moments, such as the time in Boston’s Fenway Park where Reggie Jackson, then an Oriole, had a delightful and memorable exchange with some loud fans (of which the author was one) with amazing results. The concluding chapter captures the very first game in the major-league career of Nogowski’s favorite player, his son, John Jr., who debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2020 and was all too briefly a cult hero in Pittsburgh in 2021. The stories and antics surrounding the career finales of these legends are generally untold."Last Time Out" freezes that moment in time when baseball’s greatest players put down the bat or glove and hung up the spikes for the last time.  An award-winning sportswriter and educator, JOHN NOGOWSKI taught AP language, English, and journalism at Gadsden County High School in Havana, Florida when he wasn’t watching his son play for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates or a team to be named later. (He’s ending 2022 in the Washington Nationals' organization.)
